#31 Saccharum / Sugar
Sacred Sweetness, Pleasure, Attraction
Oh, how sugar dances on the tongue. No matter how intellectual and scholarly our pursuits, sugar reminds us of our longing for simple pleasures.
Until the twelfth century, our need for sweetness was fulfilled by raw honey offered by the bees. This material had many medicinal properties and was known in Alchemy as a sacred elixir. Now most of our sources of sweetness (both literally and metaphorically) are highly processed, defined for us by a culture of consumption.
This card is a call to explore the simple sweetness in life. Can you add tenderness to your alchemical experiment? How about joy? Or even laughter? It is likely the pleasure you crave will not be found from manufactured means but from the childlike wonder residing in the heart. Remember the alchemical wisdom of: like attracts like.

To ponder: The power of attraction and aversion.
Assignment: What is the simplest and most feasible means of joy you can participate in today? It does not have to be big and boisterous … joy is everywhere.

#36 Pneuma / Breath
Inspiration, Presence, Life Force
There is no more direct way to practice alchemy than to study Pneuma. We all have access to the mystical phenomenon known as the breath. It occurs at every moment, gracing us with the gift of existence upon the physical plane. If Alchemy is the merging of physical and mystical, then this card serves as our ever-reliant bridge.
It is the magical within is, the expanding and generating life force that animates our life. This card may appear simple, but it is not. No matter how advanced you are in studying the breath, if you heed the message of this card, you will find it has more to teach. Bow to it at this very moment and you will discover the Work revitalizes itself. New space opens.
Pneuma is your lifelong alchemical ally, stating its love with every inhale and exhale.

#45 Ouroboros / The Great Serpent
The Tail Eater, The Guardian, Quantum Realm
The Ouroborus is the all-encompassing glyph of the alchemical process. The hungry snake bends itself around you in a gesture of protection and guardianship, giving you the space and safety to participate in the work. Anything and everything can be offered to its mouth for transformation. Good, bad, blasphemous, or precious — the materials of our life transmutate into gems along the great serpent’s spine.
Along with your woes, the Ouroboros engufs every pair of opposites — what is masculine becomes feminine, what is sky becomes earth, what is past becomes future. When this card appears, you have entered the quantum realm, where everything is a possibility.
No one knows the limits of the Ouroboros. Just when you fell into thinking that your life was “straightening out,” the snake takes you once again into its gaping mouth for an entirely new trajectory.
Go deeper: Look at the 1889 etching “Die Sinnlichkeit” (“Sensuality”) by Franz von Stuck.
To ponder: Your iris encircling the pupil.
Assignment: Note that the great serpent eats itself, not others. The work starts and ands with the alchemist themself. Through this rememberance, the alchemist learns to service the world.
