#11 Justice, Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot Deck
Meeting Justice:
After spinning through the destined turns of the Wheel of Fortune, the Fool finds himself face-to-face with Justice — a commanding figure seated between two towering pillars, sword in one hand and scales in the other.
She does not smile. She does not frown. She simply is—serene, piercing, exact.
The Fool hesitates, uncertain. “What now?” he asks. “I’ve followed the signs. I’ve learned so much. But sometimes I still feel lost.”
Justice gazes at him with unwavering eyes:
“Then it’s time to be honest—with yourself and with the world. The path forward requires truth.”
She lifts her sword — not to strike, but to cut through illusion. Her scales tip gently, assessing not just the Fool’s actions, but his intentions. Justice offers not punishment, but clarity. Not retribution, but balance.
The Fool begins to see: the decisions he makes echo beyond the moment. That integrity, not cleverness, is the foundation of wisdom. That truth, however uncomfortable, is sacred.
And so, with a quieter heart and a straighter spine, the Fool continues. He now knows that every step forward must be taken in alignment with a higher order — one not built on ego, but on ethics, balance, and self-accountability.

Scales: Represent balance, fairness, and moral weighing. Every choice has consequences.
Sword: Symbolizes discernment, clarity, and truth. It cuts through deception and reveals what must be faced.
Crown with a Jewel: The jewel indicates divine wisdom, highlighting Justice’s connection to higher truth.
The Pillars: These echo the High Priestess and the Hierophant—representing duality, structure, and the sacred gateway to truth.
The Square on Her Robe: A symbol of earthly law, material responsibility, and real-world consequence.
Red Robe or Cloak: Represents passion held in check by reason. Justice is not cold, but intentional.
The Balanced Posture: Justice sits upright and symmetrical, embodying steadiness and alignment with universal law.
The Roman Numeral XI: The number 11 represents a spiritual gateway, divine insight, and karmic alignment. It also symbolizes two balanced pillars (1 and 1)—a mirror of the scales and the necessity of dual perspectives.
Upright Meaning:
Knowing that there is a sense of destiny in all things is a relief at times — but how do we show up for that sense of destiny? Justice wants us to be rooted in our actions. With every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
What are our actions right now? What exactly is it we’re “fighting” for and moving towards? If someone has wronged you, Justice is a sense of karma and balance. Whose job is it to distribute that karma? Is it you? Is it the Universe?
Just because something has become codified in law or contract, doesn’t mean that it’s just. Are things truly equal and equitable for all? If not, whose duty is it to create that equality and that balance? Is it yours? Is it the Universe’s?
Truth is what matters here. Not only truth, but what we do with that truth. At the end of the day, all we can ever really, really do is be impeccable in our actions.
Do our actions align with a sense of the greater good? Are our actions rooted in our values and our principles? What contracts are being formed, signed, and agreed upon in our lives? How do we uphold those contracts with our actions? Karma always has a way.
Reversed Meaning:
When Justice shows up in reverse, we feel a sense of injustice in the actions of others, or society as a whole. For someone to “win,” means that others most “lose.” This isn’t a fact, but we can feel the force of this oppression in ways — big and small.
Karma has its way of creating equilibrium. When we experience an injustice or a broken contract from external forces, who is responsible for bringing justice back into equilibrium? Is it you? Is it them? Is it the universe? We might feel responsible for distributing that Justice to the other person or institution. Will that work? If they don’t believe in equality, if they rely on the imbalance for their own source of power, will your words or actions actually have an effect?
We can’t live in denial of structures of injustice. Prejudice, discrimination, ill-intent all exist. Who is the unfair one in this dynamic? If it is you, can you hold yourself accountable for your actions and the reactions its had on others? If it’s an outside injustice, can we really hold them accountable if they’re unwilling to compromise?
All we can really do is be impeccable in our own actions, values, and integrity systems. What aligns with you? If you’ve been unfairly treated, can you find support and elevate the voices of others in a similar situation? Can you build on your community? Can you have forgiveness and compassion for yourself for not seeing the injustice sooner? There are some things we can compromise with, and others that we simply cannot (and should not).
Again, the universe has a way. Karma has a way. It is the great equalizer. Be kind with yourself.
Obligatory note: please do not break the law.
