#12 The Hanged Man, Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot Deck

Meeting The Hanged Man:

After facing the clarity of Justice, the Fool continues his journey—eager for progress, for new ideas, for forward motion. But suddenly, the road narrows into stillness. There is no next step. No forward path. Just a figure suspended upside down, hanging peacefully from a tree, not in pain—but in deep contemplation.

The Fool stops. “Are you stuck?” he asks.

The Hanged Man smiles.

“No,” he replies. “I’m learning to let go.”

The Fool tilts his head. “But don’t you want to keep going?”

“I will,” says The Hanged Man, “when it’s time. But not everything is solved by movement. Sometimes truth is found in the pause.”

And in that moment, the Fool realizes—there are times when surrender is not weakness, but wisdom. When letting go opens the doorway to clarity. When sacrifice is not loss, but transformation. The Fool sits. And for once, he does not move.

Keywords for Justice:

  • Surrender

  • Pause

  • Perspective

  • Letting Go

  • Stillness

  • Reversal

  • Sacrifice

  • Acceptance

Associations:

  • The Element: Water (emotion, receptivity, reflection, release)

  • The Planet: Neptune (spirituality, dreams, intuition, letting go)

Card Symbolism:

  • The Inverted Position: Represents a radical shift in perception—seeing the world from an entirely new point of view. Truth is found by turning convention upside down.

  • The Tree (T-Shaped or Cross): Symbolizes the axis mundi, the connection between heaven and earth. The Hanged Man is suspended in sacred space, between worlds.

  • The Halo Around His Head: Indicates spiritual enlightenment, divine awareness, and that his suspension is intentional, not imposed.

  • The Rope Around His Foot: Suggests voluntary surrender—a conscious choice to pause and reflect, rather than a punishment.

  • The Calm Expression: Shows acceptance, peace, and inner harmony. He’s not distressed—he’s aligned with something greater than ego.

  • Hands Behind the Back: Symbolizes non-resistance, humility, and trust in the greater unfolding.

  • Blue Tunic and Red Pants: Blue = calm, inner truth, water. Red = sacrifice, passion, grounding. The combination reflects spiritual and material balance through surrender.

  • One Leg Bent (in the shape of a 4): The number 4 symbolizes stability and foundation. Through the instability of inversion, the Hanged Man finds his inner structure.

  • Roman Numeral XII: 12 is a number of cosmic order, sacrifice, and cycles—like the 12 months, zodiac signs, or apostles.

Upright Meaning:

When The Hanged Man appears upright, it is a reminder for you to practice detachment. You can’t always control how life unfolds, but you can trust that The Universe has a divine plan for you. Shift your perspective and see how everything is connected — this moment isn’t just about you, your life, or this immediate circumstance.

If you stay in touch with your intuition, if you release your grip on control, you will step into the space of divine pause. You don’t always have to work harder and proceed forward to evolve, to advance. Honor the pause. Pause for the cause. And the cause right now is a broadening of your perspective.

There are unexpected halts to our progress from time to time, but we progress nonetheless. It isn’t about “doing” more right now, but receiving. Surrender to the moment. Let go of your attachments. Take a long walk out in nature. Recollect yourself. Recenter yourself.

You’re a manifestor, you’re a co-creator, but sometimes wishing more for others is the most powerful manifestation there is. Something new is emerging for you. Give it the time it needs to properly blossom.

Reversed Meaning:

It isn’t all about you, you know? This moment in your life. You’re overfixating on a particular outcome — your ego has been activated, you’ve got your head up your ass. Just because something didn’t unfold quite the way you expected doesn’t mean it isn’t still happening for your greatest good.

Stop and rest before it’s too late — before you do something with consequences. Now is a time for you to reflect on your morals, your values, and to confront why you feel you always have to “do” something to “be” someone. Loosen that grip you have over expectations — of the world, of others, of yourself.

Sometimes breakthroughs come at the most unexpected of times. A little whisper from The Universe that puts all the puzzle pieces together. Something “clicks.” That lightbulb moment can change everything for you, for the better. Seize that moment when it comes, but don’t rush the process.

Journal Prompts for The Hanged Man:

  • What am I holding onto that is preventing me from growing or seeing clearly?

  • Where in my life could I benefit from pausing instead of pushing?

  • What perspective shift could change how I feel about a current situation?

  • How do I react to surrender? What would it feel like to lean into trust instead of control?

Affirmations:

  • “I release control and trust in the wisdom of divine timing.”

  • “I allow myself to pause, reflect, and shift my perspective with grace.”

  • “In stillness, I connect with my higher self and let clarity find me.”

Theme Song:

Let It Be by The Beatles, 1970

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I learn to read tarot myself? Absolutely. It's a skill like anything else: it just takes study, practice, and determination. Tarot Academy was built exactly for this.

Is tarot right for me? Tarot reading is the practice of interpreting symbols and archetypes to better understand life situations, emotional patterns, and decision points. It is less about prediction and more about intuitive clarity and perspective.

Is tarot about predicting the future? Not at all. Tarot highlights current energies, influences, and themes unfolding now — and helps you navigate them consciously. Your future is always shaped by your choices.

Do I need to be spiritual to get a tarot reading? No. All you need is an open mind and good intention. I'll handle the rest.
