#1 The Magician, Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot Deck

The Fool Meets The Magician:

Now that The Fool has begun his journey, the first central figure he meets is The Magician — a man in white in red robes, with tools laid out in front of him, and a magic wand pointed towards the heavens.

The Fool sees this figure and asks what he’s doing — what lesson is there to learn here? The Magician responds: “I am turning dreams into reality.” He introduces the fool to the concept of Manifestation and Focused Intent.

When we feel the power of our will and our talents, we can actively shape the present into whatever we desire it to be.

Keywords for The Magician:

  • The Force of One’s Will

  • Personal Power, Identity, & Individualism

  • Boundless Potential

  • Resourcefulness

  • Talent, Skill, Craft, Mastery

  • Concentration & Focus

  • Action & Desire

Associations:

  • The Element: All Four Elements

  • The Planet: Mercury (Communication/Intellect/Skill)

Card Symbolism:

  • The Magician’s Wand: The power to channel divine energy and shape it into the physical world — the power to manifest.

  • The Table with Tools: Tools gained from each of the suits (wands, swords, pentacles, and cups) — the power of mastering your talents, having a dominion over the physical world.

  • The Infinity Symbol: Infinite potential and endless possibilities — a very special relationship with the universe and the divine.

  • The Ouroboros Belt: A serpent eating its own tail — beginnings and endings are inseparable, rebirth is eternal. Since it’s his belt here, he knows how to harness the power of these cycles.

  • The Red & White Robes: White represents purity of intention and spiritual enlightenment, while red is passion and willful action — combined, it’s a balance between the internal and external that allow for effective manifestation.

  • The Hand Gestures: A hand pointed to the heavens, the other to the earth — “As Above, So Below.”

  • The Roman Numeral (I): Unity and the power of a singular focus — the #1 represents the self, leadership, and action.

Upright Meaning:

The Magician knows that has everything he needs to manifest his desires into reality. His experience with the world has given him the tools (wands, swords, pentacles & cups) necessary to shape his experience. He stands tall in this power, holds up his wand to the heavens, and serves as a channel for energy from the divine into the physical world.

The Magician takes initiative — it’s a balance of not only wishing for change, but becoming the change we seek. When we remind ourselves that we are co-creators with the divine, we feel the full power of what it means to live an intentional life. Nothing stands in the way of our innate magic — we are spiritual beings living a human experience, and therefore manifestation is our birthright.

When we cultivate a special relationship with the universe and exert our will/our magic towards desired outcomes, we work in harmony with the cycles of creation and transformation.

The universe wants to grant us all that we desire — The Magician reminds us that our desires and our willful, aligned action is the source of all manifestation. This is true power, and it is accessible to everyone.

Reversed Meaning:

Reversed, The Magician has lost sight of his innate power and focus — he’s doubtful, confused, unsure what to do, and therefore limited in his ability to manifest the outcomes he seeks.

If you don’t know what you want, and you don’t know what you’re capable of, then can you shape your reality towards a vision that doesn’t exist? You have the potential and you have the experience to stand in your power, but internal or external factors have complicated a very simple truth: You are a Magician.

Take time to rediscover who you are, and to feel the power of every one of your aligned actions — even in the smallest ways. Can you begin to see how your actions create ripples in your reality? What are the ripples you want to create?

It makes sense that we can’t be ready all of the time, but your experience and your talent stay within you always — if anything, it grows and expands as you continue to learn. Be gentle with yourself. Do something that makes you feel powerful.

Journal Prompts for The Magician:

  • Consider a time you successfully turned an idea into reality — how did it feel seeing your vision come to life?

  • Reflect on the talents, skills and resources that are at your disposal — how can you use them to achieve your goals?

  • What do you aspire towards? Are your daily actions aligned with this aspiration? If not, how can you keep yourself accountable to them?

  • If you’re experiencing self-doubt, reflect on how this self-doubt limits you. Knowing you’re a Magician, how can you start (even in the smallest ways) to remember who you truly are?

Affirmations:

  • “I am a powerful creator of my own reality.”

  • “I am focused and intentional.”

  • “I carry the energy that creates worlds within me.”

  • “I use my mind and my focus to create whatever I desire effortlessly.”

  • “My dreams always become reality.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I learn to read tarot myself? Absolutely. It's a skill like anything else: it just takes study, practice, and determination. Tarot Academy was built exactly for this.

Is tarot right for me? Tarot reading is the practice of interpreting symbols and archetypes to better understand life situations, emotional patterns, and decision points. It is less about prediction and more about intuitive clarity and perspective.

Is tarot about predicting the future? Not at all. Tarot highlights current energies, influences, and themes unfolding now — and helps you navigate them consciously. Your future is always shaped by your choices.

Do I need to be spiritual to get a tarot reading? No. All you need is an open mind and good intention. I'll handle the rest.
